Sony has announced the NEX-VG30 interchangeable lens camcorder. With E-Mount lenses and a 16.1MP Exmor APS-C sized CMOS sensor, the NEX-VG30 will yield a beautiful, cinematic image with shallow depth of field and low noise characteristics. This newest iteration of the VG series will also offer videographers some welcome upgrades over NEX-VG20.
Among the most notable advancements, the NEX-VG30 was built with a powered zoom seesaw lever, which will operate the new 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Power Zoom Lens and, when used in conjunction with manual zooms or even prime lenses, it will facilitate a 2x lossless digital zoom. This ground-breaking, new type of digital zoom is achieved by cropping the sensor in real time, as pioneered by Sony’s NEX-EA50UH, and entails no loss of resolution.
The new viewfinder is another well-received addition. The NEX-VG30 will have an XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF, a display originally developed for Sony’s still cameras as a replacement for an optical viewfinder. And what a replacement it is. The XGA OLED Tru-Finder EVF features 100% coverage and 2,359,000-dot resolution, so you will see exactly what the sensor is reading. When it comes to working in low light, the EVF even presents a distinct advantage over optical viewfinders.
The NEX-VG30 will also retain many of the great features of its VG predecessors. The built-in Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone will return, offering exceptional front-side directivity and stereo separation. The new camera will also shoot 16MP JPEG and RAW photographs at up to 6 frames per second, and 25 AF points will provide ample coverage for accurate focusing, even when the subject is far from the center of the frame.
Sony sees the NEX-VG30 as the preëminent “prosumer” level camera, and there are a few features that even established professionals will appreciate. A multi-interface shoe will accommodate an optional XLR attachment, bringing the finest quality microphones into play. Walking that fine line between pro and prosumer, a single memory card slot will accommodate Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo or SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, both of which have developed into professional-grade media.
The NEX-VG30 will be available “body only” or with the Sony 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Servo Zoom Lens. In addition to compatibility with Sony’s ever-expanding line of E-Mount lenses, the E-Mount’s short focal flange distance of 18mm makes it compatible with a wide range of lens adapters. For instance, using the LA-EA2 adapter (sold separately) you can attach the full selection of A-Mount lenses, which includes current Sony models and dozens of Minolta legacy lenses. Also included with your purchase is a free download of Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11, video editing software that allows you to add effects, background music, titles, text, transitions and more.
