The iPad Camera Connection Kit is a solution by Apple to transfer photos and videos from your digital camera or camcorder to your iPad.

Since the iPad doesn't have an SD card slot, there is no way for users to transfer pictures or videos from their digital camera to their iPad without first transferring the pictures to your computer in iPhoto and then sync with your iPad to transfer those pictures and videos.

The iPad Camera Connection Kit is slowly getting delivered and apparently, it comes with some pleasant surprises.

Indeed, while the SD Card reader works just as announced, the USB one is a bit more capable we thought. On top of importing pictures from cameras, users are reporting having been able to do the following:

Import pictures from an iPhone
Use USB Headsets
Or USB keyboard
This is a bit of surprise, since it’s not really Apple’s style to go the extra-length like that. Nice additions though.

Apple came up with a new iPad accessory that makes this process much easier. The iPad camera connection kit comes with two pieces that connect to your 30 pin port at the bottom of the iPad and works for all iPads up until the forth generation iPad.

One piece is for connecting a digital camera directly to the usb part of the kit, while the other piece allows you to plug an SD card into it to transfer the pictures from one device to another.

Once you plug your digital camera or an SD card to your iPad camera connection kit and plug the kit to your iPad, your photo app will automatically open on your iPad, and you will be asked to either import all photos or select the ones you want and then import.

Currently there are two versions of the iPad camera connection kit. One old version works with old generation iPad 1, iPad 2, and the new iPad 3 with retina display. The other version of the iPad camera kit is designed for the newer generation iPads with lightening connector. Apple changed the 30 pin connector to an 8 pin lightning connector on its forth generation iPad. Therefore, for those newer iPads, an updated iPad camera connection kit was released by Apple.

There are still pieces that you can buy for the lightning connector. One piece comes with lightning to USB to connect to your digital camera directly while the other piece is a lightning to SD card for transferring pictures and vides from one device to another.

The Camera Connection Kit is a smart, useful accessory for digital camera owners. It has two separate adaptors, each of which plugs into the dock connector on the iPad base. You can insert a memory card through the SD Card Reader and transfer photos onto your iPad, where they can be viewed using the built-in Photos app.

The second adaptor is the Camera Connector, which has a USB port through which you can connect a camera or other devices, which use USB ports to connect.

The Camera Connector features a USB interface. Just plug it into the dock connector port on your iPad, then attach your digital camera or iPhone using a USB cable (not included). iPhone 3G is not supported.
Use the SD Card Reader to import photos and videos directly from your camera's SD card. Connect it to your iPad, then insert your digital camera's SD card into the slot.
